It sure was hard to get back into the swing of things today! I'm glad there is no snow in the near future!
We have begun our Africa studies to go with our read a million activity. Please remember to put your coins on each night that you read 20 minutes or more.
There is no homework tonight. READ 20 is all they've got.
New spelling and vocabulary words have been posted. Our spelling test will be Friday and our vocabulary test will be Monday. The kids are getting so good at those vocabulary tests. It is time to start making them harder!!
I am also excited to say their ability to pick out parts of speech have also been improving. They did a really hard activity today with adverbs and they did amazingly!

Read A Million Minutes....
This is the note that the kids are bringing home tomorrow...I know they don't always remember, so I thought I'd include it on the blog.
Dear families,
During the next four weeks your BK student will be challenged to "Change the World with a Book." As educators at Jacobson, we encourage our students to read, knowing that it can change their lives. Students who read are more successful students, and books open doors to new worlds.
Knowing the importance of reading, we would also like to help change the lives of students who may not have access to the wonder of books. Here is where we are asking for your help in the coming month.
Each night that your child reads (we suggest a minimum of 15 minutes each evening), please put a piece of change on the reading sheet. You can chose what coin you'd like to contribute. Each Friday we will collect the record sheet and send a new one home with your child. The change collected will be used to buy books for children in an orphanage in Uganda. BK students will be working to "Change the World with a Book." The class that collects the most money during our reading incentive program will select a special book to send to Uganda. These students will sign their book, and a picture of the class will be enclosed.
During the 4 weeks of our program, students will have the opportunity to learn more about the children they will be helping. Cody Kevin is serving in the military in Uganda, and in his spare time volunteers at a local orphanage. We hope to SKYPE Cody Kevin to make this experience all the more real for our learners. We have invited a speaker who has traveled to Africa to share her experiences with all of us. In addition we have planned weekly activities where students can experience African stories, crafts, foods, music, etc...We are very excited about this upcoming month.

We designed this reading incentive program to be a win-win for
our BK learners. They win when they read, and the students who they will
help will also be winners. We are hoping that our students learn the joy
of giving, as well as learning about a new culture, and increasing our at home
reading!

Study for tomorrow's spelling test! Our vocabulary test will be Friday (weather permitting)!
Several students will be bringing home reading logs each night to have signed by the parents. These students are behind in their RC quizzes. They are to read each night for 20 minutes and have their parents sign their logs. If they are not returned it will be considered a late assignment. They will have to read their 20 minutes over their recess time.
Watch the bags tomorrow for a note about Read a Million Minutes. It is BLUE!

Please remember the concert tonight! The kids need to be in the high school vocal music room by 6:45 for the 7:00 concert. Because of the concert, there is no regular homework tonight. Some kids have late work, and that is due tomorrow!
Wednesday is a normal day...hard to believe, because we very rarely have them anymore!
Thursday morning is our Valentine party. The kids brought home a pink note detailing this event. We will be watching a movie in the morning. The kids can bring a snack and drink for the movie. This is also our picture day. Spring pictures will be taken of all kids. You will get the packet and then decide if you want to return the packet, or keep and pay for the pictures.

Bridge building: introduction to physical science
Students were given only playdough and toothpicks to build a bridge. Each group had 15 minutes to plan and construct their bridge. We then read an article about how certain bridges are destroyed. We watched a video and then planned how we would destroy a bridge if we had one to destroy. It was really a great thinking activity! It was so fun to see their minds trying to wrap around how to build with only 2 items for supplies!
