How much homework should a fifth grader have?

HOMEWORK QUESTIONS:
There have been a few questions lately dealing with how much homework kids should have at each grade level.  I'm not claiming to be a homework expert, but I did want to share with you the research that we are using when deciding the amount of homework to give the kids each night...

Cooper points to "The 10-Minute Rule" formulated by the National PTA and the National Education Association, which suggests that kids should be doing about 10 minutes of homework per night per grade level. In other words, 10 minutes for first-graders, 20 for second-graders and so on.

Children are all different learners.  Some will take longer and some will take shorter amount of time to finish the same work.  Our goal is for the kids to have 50 minutes or less Monday-Thursday.  If your child is CONSISTENTLY working for more than an hour on homework, please contact me and let's see what's going on.

Children’s Miracle Network Radiothon

Next week, September 16-20, the students are asked to donate money towards the staff member they would like to see get “Silly Stringed” during the Homecoming Pep Rally. They may bring money any or every day next week. The money will be collected during lunch and will be put towards the staff member of their choice. All money will go towards Kids Helping Kids. The staff members to choose from are Shawna, Joe, Dianna, Mr. Eide and Counselor Johnson. At the high school it is Mr. Kelley, Mrs. Burk, Ms. Barrus, Mr. Jass and Tina. Please help show your support!

9-12-13

DOJOs: Remember that parents have access to check the DOJO scores each day.  This week, several kids have lost points due to homework being incomplete!  It is so important to stay caught up.  When there is homework almost every day, one day late makes for a big pile!!

Reading Counts: We are now a month into school.  Ask your kids to show you the list of which quizzes they have passed so far.  I'd say in 4 weeks they should have at least 2 passed.  We have 4 kids that have passed 5 or more so far!  Homework each night is 20 minutes of reading.

Vocabulary test tomorrow!  Studying for this test (and reading) is the only thing the kids have for homework.  The link to the words is under wiki on the right side of the screen.
