What's happening this week?
Monday: No school due to teacher inservice
Reading: This week we will continue to work on sequential order in a story. Our strategy focus will be on questioning in order to give yourself a purpose in reading. We are reading the story of Eye of the Storm. It features photographs by Warren Faidley. The kids really liked looking at some of his pictures this week. He is a storm chaser.
A couple of other key concepts this week:
How does point of view affect a story?
Prove your inferences with textual information
Find the climax of a story
Writing: We will finish our news articles on Tuesday. We'll start spooky story narratives on Wednesday and continue them on Friday.
Spelling: No new words this week in spelling or vocabulary, as we will be using our time this week to work on reference sources (dictionary, encyclopedia, etc.)
Vocabulary: Test Tuesday over Eye of the Storm words
Halloween party: In fifth grade we do not have Halloween/Christmas/Valentine's Day parties. We do watch a movie during the afternoon when the lower elementary are having their parties. On Thursday afternoon we will watch a movie. Students may bring a snack/drink/pillow with them to school!

10-18-13
It was a little hard to come back today, for the kids! They had the field trip Wednesday and the day off Thursday. I think they were confused as to what day today was!
We took a vocabulary test today. The kids got new spelling and vocabulary words for next week. The spelling test will be next Friday and our vocabulary test will be a week from Tuesday.
The courage essays were returned to the kids today. They can chose to keep the grade they got on their rough draft, or turn in a final draft and be graded on that.
Other homework:
Verb tense worksheet
Science center idea web
Finish reading Earthquake Terror and write your event summaries
Students with 0-1 RC quiz passed will need to stay in for recess until they pass 2 quizzes. We have been in school for a WHOLE quarter and more reading needs to be happening for those kids. If you aren't reading at home 20 minutes a night, you aren't doing your homework. The only way to become a better reader is to read!
