10-24-14

Today is the last day of MAP testing.  Today will be make-ups for kids that were gone.  The kids have handled the shuffle in schedule/and rooms very well this week.  It's hard to change our routine.  Today we will be taking the end of theme test.  This will cover everything that we learned during the first theme.  There was no studying to be done....so don't worry that you missed something!  The kids have been working on their review of the materials here at school this week.

Next Friday is Halloween.  We don't do holiday parties in 5th and 6th grade.  Instead we have a movie time during the rest of the school's party.  Please allow your 5th grader to bring a pillow, drink, and snack that day.

Next week:  We will return to normal!  We will have new spelling and vocabulary words and get back into the stories from our reading series. This next unit is called Give it all You've Got!

What's happening this week? 10-13-14

Spelling and vocabulary:  We are working on the area of context clues this week.  We'll be using our story's words to help us with this skill.  We will also continue to do the word ladders this week.  They will help us increase our spelling and vocabulary skills. We will also be practicing the roots of vis and vid.

Reading:  A great deal of our work this week will revolve around text structure organization.  This is often difficult for students.  Remind them to be patient.  This type of multi-step thinking takes a little work.  We will be doing a genre study of tall tales this week, and into next.

Grammar: We will be continuing with our noun work.  By the end of the unit, students must be able to find a noun in a sentence, recognize and define: common nouns, proper nouns, singular nouns, plural nouns, regular and irregular nouns, possessive nouns, plural and singular possessive nouns.

Writing: Students will be writing an essay for Veteran's Day. We will also be writing a tall tale narrative, where we will be working on introductions, sequencing, and closings.
