We are still working our way through Bridge to Terabithia.  We are on chapter 4 today.  With today's reading, we worked on synonyms and some new vocabulary.  Our current grammar unit is commas...not a favorite for the kids, but very necessary! We've covered commas in a series, between adjectives, in dates and addresses, and in letters.  We're moving on to appositives and quotations next.

Coming soon...March Madness

MARCH IS: BRONCO READING AWARENESS MONTH!!
CELEBRATE MARCH MADNESS WITH BRONCO READERS!!

We have a variety of activities planned for the month. Among those are:

~TEACHER READERS: BK teachers are going to be going to the library after school to read to kids, and they will be on school busses reading to the kids. Boxes of books will be on each bus for kids to read the month of March.
~STUDENT READERS: If you would like a class of students to come read to your business, day care, hospital, Leinbach Center… please contact the Jacobson Office (444-4300) and we will send some student readers your way, with books to read to you.
~BOOK BOXES: Boxes of books will be dropped off at various businesses for children to read while their parents are shopping throughout the month of March.
~PENNIES FOR PATIENTS: All of BK School District will be participating in bringing coins to school the last week of March . NHS students will collect the coins. Details will be forthcoming in a letter home with students.
~DAILY DEAR (Drop Everything and Read) TIME will be done the month of March in all of the BK classrooms.
~READING INCENTIVES: As each student passes an RC book or for lower elementary after they read a book, they will receive a paper basketball to hang up with their book title and name on it, in the gym. Reading incentives will be given to readers in each grade level. The incentives are theater bucks from the Lyric Theater, passes for ice cream cones from the Belmond Drive In and books from Thrivent Financial with the help of Dirk van der Linden.
~READING AWARENESS LITERATURE: Flyers on the importance of reading will be passed out at various businesses in Belmond.
~MARCH MADNESS BRACKETS will be featured around BK School District. These brackets will provide some fun challenges to kids to read!!
~CHILDREN’S BOOK SWAP: A children’s book swap will be held with each grade level. Your children can bring as many good condition books as they wish and trade for that number of books.
~BOOK SWAP FOR ADULTS: A book swap for adults will be held during the Reading Time out Event (See Below). Bring any books you wish to trade to the Jacobson Office. We will be setting them on tables as you walk in. Take as many books as you bring!!

2-20-16

Well, we've begun our literature unit.  We are taking a break from the Houghton Mifflin basal series for the next three weeks.  Our spelling and vocabulary activities will be coming from the story that we are reading, so there won't be the weekly spelling/vocabulary tests that we've become used to.  We will be using the story Bridge to Terabithia, to work on our comprehension skills, as well as reading stamina, and grammar work.

This week we worked on conflict (external and internal) and point of view.  Our grammar has revolved around punctuation, and will continue to do so until the end of our Terabithia unit.

Homework for the weekend:
Enjoy the nice weather
Read 20 minutes
Comma worksheet front and back

Chopsticks

After reading a story about Chinese heritage, the students learned how to use chopsticks.  Today, they used them at lunch!  They had a great time, even though it was a little frustrating at first.  I was amazed at how fast they caught on.

We were able to go  to the high school today to watch the wrestling assembly.  For those of you who don't know, we are proud to have 5 of our Broncos headed to state on Thursday.  If you are planning on taking your child, please let us know, so we can get homework ready!

We will be doing a different type of reading for the next 2 to 3 weeks. Instead of reading from our basal reader, we will be doing a literature unit. We will be reading Bridge to Terabithia. All of our spelling and vocabulary activities will be coming from the story. We will not have separate spelling and vocabulary lists and activities. They will all be tied to Bridge to Terabithia.

Winter Concert

Thank you all for attending the 5th/6th grade Winter Concert. I'm excited to say we had 90% of our kids come back to school for the concert.  I know it is hard to get everyone ready, and come back for an evening event, but the kids have been working so hard to prepare for this event. I posted a link  to some great pictures, taken by TJ Turner.  Check them out!

Great photos

Cross Country Skiing

As most of you know, Cross Country Skiing starts next week.  Please come prepared for a better experience.  This means the following

1.       Winter Coat
2.       Snow boots
3.       Mittens or gloves
4.       Hat or Hood
5.       Socks
6.       Snow pants. Or water repellant sweat pants work very well for skiing.
If you have neither of those bring an extra pair of pants to put on AFTER you get done.  It’s not fun sitting in wet pants all day.

We took part 2 of our FAST assessment today, so all of our class time was devoted to that. Results will be coming your way at conferences in a couple of weeks.  We'll be getting our new spelling words tomorrow and our vocabulary words on Thursday.  Our schedule is WAY off due to all of these crazy snow days.  Let's home that the snow is finished, and we can get into our normal routine again.

Coming Thursday: Class pictures and concert (7:00 at the auditorium)

Friday: Valentine event
Students can bring a pillow, drink, and small snack for our movie.  Students with late work will be working in Ms. Bram's room until they are finished.

Thursday...February 11th

On Thursday we will have spring pictures!  Students brought home a picture form a week or so ago.  They do not have to have the form to get their pictures taken.

Thursday is also our band/vocal concert.  Students were given a note with the specifics on this last week.  The concert is in the high school auditorium.  Students should be there by 6:45. Questions on the concert?  erin.bunge@bkcsd.org

Silly Sally coming to Jacobson in March...

On March 11th, we will be having a Preschool-6th Grade assembly featuring Silly Sally the Clown.  Her presentation is focused on character and anti-bullying.  The assembly will begin at 9:30 in the gym.  This ties to our PBIS positive Bronco Pride Expectations!

Below is a link to her website if you would like more info, to see testimonials, or watch one of her shows.

2-4-16

Back to school after two days, and the kids were tired by noon!  It's funny how fast we all get out of schedule.  Hopefully that is the end of the snow days!

I took the kids down and ran the first part of the FAST test with them today.  This was the fluency part of the test.  The second part of the test will be run on Monday.  I will share the results with you at conferences, coming in March.  I'm pleased with the results from today!

The kids have their vocabulary test tomorrow over Yang the 2nd.

The only homework for today is READ 20 minutes!
