Happy Valentine's Day. We had a fun afternoon making some "crafty" things for our Valentine's party. The afternoon was split between testing and "crafting". We began taking the MAP test today. This is a test that we use in our building to assure that students are where they need to be on the educational path. This is our first time using this particular test, and it looks as if it will be very useful for monitoring progress. We will be testing three different days this week. Due to this, we will not be having a spelling test this Friday. We got our new words today, but will not test over them until next Wed. There is no homework tonight.

Valentine's Day: WE are not having a specific party for Valentine's Day, but some of the kids asked if it would be OK to bring valentines. I gave them class lists and told them they could bring them if they'd like. We will take a little time out of Monday and pass out valentines. This is NOT required.

Reading response: I will no longer be requiring reading response journals from kids who are caught up on required quizzes. If they are caught up, they still need to read their 15 minutes a night, but it is not necessary to sign the logs. I will check every time a quiz is due, and if they fall behind they will have to start taking them home again. The next quiz is due Feb. 15.

Shoot for 100 books: Our February reading incentive deals with sports stars and reading. Every time a child passes and RC quiz they are putting a basketball up on a poster. If we hit 100 by the end of Feb. we will be having a movie in the afternoon. R-E-A-D

Homework for tonight: Read 15, reading response (for some), pb45 for Meyer's class

Tests: Test over Second sister tomorrow
Friday spelling test
Monday vocab test

I will be out of the district at an AEA meeting tomorrow.

Reading: Reading response
Our strategy of the week was compare and contrast. We are finished with inference. The kids did SO well on this unit that we took 20 minutes this week to play boardgames. Sometimes I think the kids get frustrated with reading and think that they can't do it. This was a great ego boost! We are now going to work on similes and metaphors during our daily reading review time.

Vocabulary: The kids got their week 16 words today. The test will be a week from Monday. I will be updating the wiki with the new words over the weekend.

Spelling: practice book page 44

Writing: Our next writing activity will be a demonstration activity. We will be writing a paper and then giving a demonstration speech.

Grammar: practice book page 14
