What a day...

The kids spent the day at Exercising your Character!  This great event is sponsored by Hy-Vee and teaches the kids all about the importance of exercise, and the importance of having good character.  Check out this video....I'll send out our pictures and videos tomorrow!

The kids were amazing!  They were so well behaved and respectful.  A big thanks for Jose's dad and Andrew's mom for coming with us to lend a hand!

Iowa assessments

We will only be taking the assessments on Tuesday and Wednesday, due to our field trip on Thursday. Remember, on Thursday we are heading to exercising your character in Des Moines. The students will get a t-shirt that they need to wear on that day. The shirts are provided by the people putting on the program, not something you have to buy! You also do not need to send any lunch, as Hyvee is donating our lunch.

No homework tonight, just get lots of rest so that you are ready to perform on the Iowa assessments tomorrow.

Onomatopoeia

One way that we learn new skills is to sing/rap about them.  Some students learn a concept better when they can add a little music to it!  In case you can't understand what they are spelling, it's
O-N-O-M-A-T-O-P-O-E-I-A, the sound of the word is the noise that it makes!  It gets stuck in their heads, and they are humming it all day long.  That's the point...taking a test, don't remember the word, just hum a little tune and the answer will come to you!  We use this strategy a lot in 5th grade language arts.

NIACC visit

BK 5th graders are beginning their work with the PappaJohn Center through NIACC. Today, the first day, trained facilitators visited our students’ classroom to get them excited about the program by introducing terms and concepts of entrepreneurship.  The second day, students are invited to visit the NIACC campus where they choose a product, borrow money from a bank, buy resources they will need, make the product, then sell the product and determine if they made a profit. The visit concludes with a tour of NIACC which offers students a sense of campus life. Our trip will be on April 18th. Look for more photos and information after our trip!
