StarWalk Kids Media Supports Reading during Winter Break with Free Access to its 520 eBook Collection

StarWalk Kids Media has announced that it will make all 520
eBooks in its collection available free of charge for anyone with Internet access—children, families and
educators—from December 24, 2014 through January 5, 2015. NO Passwords • NO logins. Kids can
just start reading by visiting StarWalkKids.com/PopUp.

“This is our second time that we’ve focused on winter break as an optimum time to make our PopUp
Library available to all children,” said founder and author Seymour Simon. “So many families give and receive new computers, tablets and other devices over the holidays. It is a perfect time to encourage children to use these technologies for reading.”

This is something that you can subscribe to, but for the two weeks listed above, it is free. Just in case your kiddos needs something to read the next couple of weeks....

CUT...CUT....CUT....those labels and box tops

The holidays are a great time to cut and collect soup labels and box tops.  When you are headed to Grandma's house for the holidays, ask her to save them for you.  We get money for school supplies every time you turn these in to your teacher.

Be on the look out....

I'm missing many of my classroom library books.  If you're cleaning your rooms over Christmas break and you run across them, please return them in January! If you're still reading them, by all means, keep them until you are finished.

Remember, your next RC quiz is due January 15th.  This will be quiz #8!

There was no homework for the weekend.  (Except, of course, to read!)

Language arts:
We are working on our adjective unit right now.  Last week we had a great time taste testing some adjectives.  This week we will be continuing with our adjectives on Monday and Tuesday.  On Wednesday we will be having a quiz over adjectives, nouns, verbs, conjunctions, and articles.  Each time we finish a part of speech, we quiz over all of them.  This helps the kids to remember that they can't forget about what they've learned.  Thursday and Friday we will be working with Interjections.

Writing:
We have been writing a holiday paper.  We will continue to write that on Monday and Tuesday.  The final draft will be due Wednesday.  The kids are typing it on Thursday. We are concentrating on using conjunctions correctly, and NOT writing run-on sentences.

Reading:
We will be taking our RC quiz over Mae Jemison on Monday. Before we leave on the 19th, RC quiz #7 is due. This week and next we are going to be concentrating on the use of poetry and figurative language.  This is a challenging, but enjoyable unit.  You may have to help a little at home.  Kids often have the crazy idea that they can't write poetry!

Book orders due Friday

Our last book order before Christmas break went out today.  I'm sorry to rush it, but in order to get it back before Dec. 19th, it has to be in by Friday.  If you'd like to order a gift for your child, just let me know. I'll call you when it gets here, instead of sending it home with your child.

12-1-14

Today we began a new adventure.  Our switched up classrooms seem to be running smoothly, so far.  The kids are definitely a little sleepy today!  They are pretty excited about the switches and the fact that we have only 15 school days before our Winter BREAK.  We have a lot to do between now and then, however!

Upcoming events:
Spelling test: Friday
Vocabulary test: Monday
RC #6: Due today
Book order: due Friday

We are finishing up our Give It All You've Got theme.  We'll be reading Mae Jemison as our story this week. Our reading strategy this week is Main idea and supporting details.  We'll finish up on conjunctions and move onto articles and adjectives.  We are beginning a big writing assignment that will take us a couple of weeks.  We're working on introductory paragraphs, as well as not starting sentences with conjunctions.

We're in for a short week next week.  Remember we only have school Monday and Tuesday. The kids won't have new spelling or vocabulary words.  We'll start over fresh when we come back in December.

Last week we worked on homophones and conjunctions.  We finished the story Fear Place.  We worked on using clues from the story to make predictions and inferences.  We learned the difference between the literary techniques of foreshadowing and flashbacks.

We will continue these skills this week and also do some creative Thanksgiving writing!

Our next quiz (#6) is due when we come back from Thanksgiving break, so keep reading over break.
