We need your child's tshirt size for an upcoming field trip, by tomorrow if possible.

Also, the note mentioned a Veteran's Day activity we are doing.  Please fill out the form if you have a Veteran in your family.  We'd also like to borrow a picture of this person for a couple of weeks if possible.

10-23-16

We've taken our second SRI test this year.  Ask your child how they did!  If a student goes up, they are given an award.  Students who don't are encouraged to do a few things to help raise their score by next month.  They are given a lexile level that their independent books should fall into.  They are asked to read over the weekends, not just on school days.  They are asked to focus on their books when they are reading them!  Our next RC quiz is due on Monday, October 31st.  It is quiz #4.

Our October practice sheet is also due on the 31st.  This month kids are asked to do 5 reading labs, pass 2 RC quizzes, do 2 mouse coding activities, 2 Newsela articles, and 2 peer tutoring (help someone study, or do their homework) sessions.

This week's spelling words are:
hare, harsh, warn, snare, gorge, scar, sore, floor, carve, barge, torch, lord, tore, bore, flair, soar, flare, lair, fare, and rare

The spelling skill we are working on is words that rhyme may or may not share a word ending.  The pretest will be Tuesday, but the test will not be until next week!

This week's vocabulary words are:
The Fear Place Vocabulary Definitions
1. cautious - careful and not taking chances.
2. concentrate - to give your full attention to.
3. discomfort - a feeling of mild distress.
4. dismayed - filled with sudden concern or distress.
5. excitement - a stirred up feeling.
6. immobile - fixed in one place.
7. stamina - the strength needed to keep doing something tiring or difficult.
8. terrified - filled with overpowering fear.
9. unsure - not certain and having doubts.
10. futile - having no useful result or useless.
11. momentum - the force or speed of motion.
12. engulfed - swallowed up or overwhelmed by something.

These words will also not be tested until next week.

In language arts this week, we'll be finishing our verbs unit with a couple of days on verb consistency.  When writing, often times students change verb tenses in their writing. This makes their writing confusing.   We will also begin our lesson on using possessive nouns and apostrophes.

Our writing this week will be finishing up our tall tales, and beginning our Veteran's Day essay.  If you have a veteran in your family's history, please fill out the Veteran's form that your child is bringing home tomorrow.  We'd love to have you send a picture, or a photocopy of a picture, with your child, of your family's veteran.  We'd like to hang it up on a bulletin board for the next couple of weeks.  We'd also LOVE to have a veteran come and talk to our class if you know of anyone who would like to do that.

Reading this week will revolve around the skill of inference.  We will be using the skills to try and solve a mystery.  The mystery on Monday-Wednesday involve a man named Harris Burdick, who has gone missing!  On Thursday and Friday, our mysteries will revolve around some "discovered" WANTED posters.

Science:
On Monday we will be doing our Computer Science coding.  Tuesday-Thursday we will continue our plant science unit.  We've discussed the parts of a plant, the types of plants (vascular and nonvascular), and now we are moving onto the uses of plants.

Friday is our Halloween movie.  We do not dress up, or have a party in 5th or 6th grade, but we do get to watch a movie and eat snacks while the other grades are having their parties.  We will be voting on which movie we are watching later in the week.  Remember, kids can bring a pillow, a snack, and a drink for Friday!

The Puberty Talk

As part of 5th grade health, Mr. Owens and Nurse D will be talking with the 5th grade students on puberty and changing bodies in November.  This sometimes leads to some interesting conversations at home.  I just wanted to let our families know, in case you would like to have conversations with your child before or after the "talk" days. Our talk days are November 9th and 11th. If you have specific questions about the topics discussed on these days, please feel free to contact Mr. Owens, or Nurse D.

BAND

Band....
Just a reminder that when students are signed up for band, they need to go to lessons and band class.  Some of the kids are trying to "miss" band, when the learning lab activity is something that they want to do, but when it is something they don't want to do, they want to go to band.  Students will be sent to band with or without their instruments unless there is a note from parents saying they have quit band.  Thank you for your cooperation on this matter.

Some students have a lot of homework tonight... Be sure to ask them which things they are finished with and which things they still have to do.

Reading Counts quiz number 3 was due this weekend, so anyone who didn't have it done by today, has to stay in for recess until it is caught up. There are still a few kids that have not passed number 2 yet either!

Read the pages in the science book on plant parts. Answer the 5 questions on page 71.

Due Wednesday: Corrections for skills test, and tall tale story first draft

This week is bullying Prevention Week. Today we were able to go to an assembly. Tomorrow is be a buddy not a bully day. We will be working with the kindergarteners on an art project.

Bully Awareness Week- beginning Monday

Monday - Kickoff Day!
*Students and staff will gather in the gymnasium for an all school kickoff assembly
and skit performed by some of our 6th grade students.

Tuesday - Be A Buddy NOT a Bully Day!
* Upper elementary classrooms will pair with lower elementary classrooms to do fun games and activities to encourage positive interactions among all students.

Wednesday - FLOOD Facebook with Kindness!
*On this day, we will be asking all students to do a Random Act of Kindness for someone. This could mean opening the door for someone, raking leaves for their neighbor, or picking up trash at the park. Students/families are then asked to take a picture of them doing the Random Act of Kindness and post to Facebook using the hashtag #BKBeKind . We will track entries using the hashtag. Each photo posted will be entered into a drawing to win a prize! To do this:
  1. Make sure that your post is public. (This is necessary for us to track responses!)
  2. If you are not comfortable with making your post public, simply send the photo as a direct message to the Belmond-Klemme facebook page and it will be posted as part of an album.

Thursday - Lift Each Other Up Day!
*In “specials” this week, students will be participating in an art activity that concentrates on giving compliments and using kind, uplifting words towards others. This project will be finished on this day. (Pictures to come!)

Friday - Wear Blue Day!
*All students and staff are asked to wear blue - the color for bullying awareness!

Mother/Son Football Frenzy Night

10-12-16

Homework:
Read 20 minutes.  Quiz #3 is due on Monday.
Study for tomorrow's spelling test

Tomorrow is our first reading theme test.  There isn't anything to study.  It is just over the reading skills that we've practiced so far this year...like sequencing, text structure, categories...

I will be at meeting tomorrow, and will be out of the district.  If you need to get a message to your child, call the office.

Basketball sign up....Mother/son Football Frenzy

2 important notes went home yesterday and today!

Check the bags for BCBC basketball sign up. They are due October 21st.

Mother and son football frenzy notes went out today.  They are due back October 25th.

Picture retakes

Image result for picture retakes School picture retakes will be on Friday.  If you want to have your child's picture retaken you must return the original package that day.  Everyone in the district must have their picture taken for school records (even if you don't purchase the pictures)

Our first field trip

We will be taking our first field trip this Friday.  At 10:00 we will walk uptown to the Belmond museum.  They will be working with us on 2 separate topics.  We will learn about the Native American history, as related to Belmond.  This will tie in perfectly with what the kids are learning about in History.  We will also be learning about Belmond’s tornado history.  This will fit with the theme we just ended called Nature’s Fury.  Our trip will last about an hour, so we will NOT be needing a lunch for this trip.  Please send your child in comfortable walking shoes.  If the weather is nice enough, we are going to walk up and back.  If it happens to rain, we will be taking the bus.  Our next field trip will be on November 4th.  Thanks to the generosity of some of our community members, we will be attending a play called Rock the Presidents.  It will be at NIACC.  More information on this event will be coming your way closer to the end of the month.

I'd like to start by thanking all of you that were able to attend conferences last week.  It is really nice to speak to you all in person!  Remember, you don't have to wait for conferences to talk to me!  Call or email ANY time!  If you weren't able to make it to conferences, I'm nearly always available before school, over my lunch time, and from 3:30-4!

What's coming up this week?
RC #3 is due on the 15th.  It's a Saturday, so the kids will actually have until Monday!

Thursday I will be gone at a meeting, and Mrs. Buseman will be in my room as a substitute.

Friday we will be walking up to the Belmond museum to learn about Belmond's history during it's BIG tornado.  This fits perfectly with the Nature's Fury unit we just finished in Reading.

Friday is also picture retake day.

Tests this week:
Tuesday is our Vocabulary test over Tall tale words.
Words: hero, heroine, deed, tradition, tale, frontier, settler
https://quizlet.com/7394596/tall-tale-vocabulary-flash-cards/

Wednesday is a short quiz over Verbs.
The kids need to be able to write the being verbs: be, been, being, is, was, were, am, are
They also need to know how to put verbs into the correct tenses, and recognize verbs in a sentence

Thursday is our Spelling test over Tall tale words.
It is also the day of our end of theme test over Nature's Fury.  This isn't something that they can study for.  It is mostly using their reading skills.

Note: Wrestling

This note went home with the kids on Thursday...5th graders being 5th graders...I thought I'd post it here too, since I picked 10 of them up off of the floor after school on Thursday!
